Happy 111th Birthday, Grandmother Gentry!

My great-grandmother turned 111 last Thursday, and my family got together and celebrated this past weekend. Grandmother Gentry is my mother's paternal grandmother, and she is a rare jewel. Although her memory has faded, she still knows that Jesus Christ is her best friend.
She lights up every time she sees my nephew, Riley. She has taught him to say "Ba Ba Black sheep, have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, 3 bags full..." I don't know the rest, but she can say it all.

This cake is from Edgar's Bakery in Birmingham, AL. Their cakes are so good... especially the strawberry cake with strawberry icing. Mmmmm! This one was really good, too! It was a white cake with buttercream icing. Catherine (my sister) has a friend that decorates these cakes, and she is amazing! She made my wedding cake.

Wow! Happy Birthday to Grandmother Gentry! I have a soft spot for elder family members of others, possibly because mine have passed away when I was young... and didn't get to connect with them as much as I'd like when I was older. The birthday cake looks amazing too!

That is so sweet! How blessed you must feel to have been able to spend so much of your life with her. And how blessed she must feel to have seen her great grandkids grow up into adulthood as well as see her great-great grandchildren.
The cake is also beautiful!!

Wow! My great grandmother died just before her 103rd birthday. Your great grandmother definitely has longevity!

They say that long-term memory, esp. the memories we first remember from when we are 3-5 years old are the last to go. So that's probably why she does so good with the nursery rhyme!
